What do you think about our Government's plan to merge several councils?

Do you think it is a good idea?

Why, or why not?

I do not believe this is a good idea as our rates will once again go up.

I am in the Stirling Shire and it is so big anyway, I think the current good service we received would not continue if there were other Councils merging.

I also do not understand how it would save the Government any money?

I really do not like the idea. I also have similar concerns about the rates going up.
I personally don't think it is a good idea. Just have to look at some of the sports groups that merged and the outcome was not that good!
Fiona, Haven't yet met anyone who agrees with it!

Some advice from a visitor from the east. It cost to merge two Sunshine Coast councils in Queensland; it cost again to demerge.
grann, we the taxpayers have no choice in this though

The state government would like to save cost and cut the staff, there will be a lot of staff losing their jobs, then losing their house when they can't afford to pay their home loan. The government never think of the staff who lose their job, how they going to survive? I think Australia should have cut the costs and expenses that spend on the refugee and spend the money look after his own people. Don't try to help others when you can even look after your own country residents.

The state government reckons they can save costs by decrease the number of staffs. Same action taken by Quantas. After the councils merging, the rates will going up and less services provided. All the rates payer will not be happy with the result especially with the council that provides 24hours security or 24hours security & ranger services. More likely the services will be cancel to save costs.
We had no say in the original merger. We then had our say at the ballot box.
It's an excellent idea and has merit. With great respect it's about economies of scale and the savings will be in all the mayors and councillors who get allowances .They will be no more or reduced in number and the wage bill will be cut.The other savings will follow which is the logic of the idea.
